Ahiahi marie koutou,
A milestone, we started our local hockey in Putāruru! What a great afternoon / evening on Tuesday. It was really neat to have all the kids playing, parents supporting and everyone learning alongside each other.  I have attached a couple of pics that I took.  

Please find attached the draw for this week as a pdf.  Please note there are slightly different game times as we have had a couple of extra team entries.  This week I have set up a time for the two teams that have a bye - to learn some skills / play some skill-based games on the grass, so you will still get some hockey time.  After the holidays if we still have an odd number of teams, we can build the skills session or fun game into the turf space as then daylight savings will be started so we will have more light to run an extra round. 

Can I please just ask schools to encourage some parents to help organise the teams and facilitate games.  
These are the roles that we need support with for each team - minimal hockey or no hockey skills required - we are all learning together =) Coach / Manager can be combined but if you have enough parents then sharing the load is fun.  

 Coach - someone who is positive and encouraging who may give the players a little work on each week - such as
sticks on the ground to collect the ball off another player (block tackle)
dribble the ball using the flat side of the hockey stick
passing to a teammate

 Manager - knows who is in their team, timekeeper (for the game), helps all the players have a turn at playing (subs) 

 Game Facilitator - helps keep the game safe and watches for
Who touched the ball before it went out
Inside the scoring zone for a goal
Keeping sticks and ball on the ground or low (stick below hip and ball below ankle)
They can also help with
Spreading out players if it gets a bit congested 
Playing soccer with feet - if it just hits their feet all good, if they kick it or stop it like a soccer ball, this is a good time to remind them we are playing hockey and to use their sticks. 

Rob from the college will run the games this second round - he will need support to run all three games   I will be there to support the set up but also to help run the skills session for the extra two teams with any other parents that would like to learn a wee bit to help their school / players.
